To the Editor:
Representative Jonathan McKane understands what needs to be done about the high cost of health insurance.
Having served on the Insurance and Finance Committee for four years, McKane has developed a deep understanding of the serious health insurance problem in Maine. He has demonstrated many times ways to cut the costs of health care and health insurance. The approaches to reducing health insurance costs that he promotes have worked well in other states. Maine people should be able to benefit from these tried and true programs instead of an ineffective, experimental and costly program like the Dirigo plan.
McKane supports a free market for health insurers as do most other states. Insurance companies are leaving Maine. Dirigo taxes health care so insurance companies up their rates to pass on that “off set” tax. This results in fewer Mainers being able to afford to buy health insurance so the uninsured rolls grow.
Dirigo is a downward spiral, unhealthy for more and more of us. It is a known fact that when two companies compete for buyers of their product, each will try to lower its cost to gain more customers. It is to our benefit for insurance companies to compete.
Please join me in re-electing McKane so he can keep working toward a solution to high health insurance costs. He represents the towns of Damariscotta, Newcastle, Edgecomb, Bristol, South Bristol and Monhegan.
