To the Editor:
I’m writing to strongly endorse State Representative Jon McKane for reelection in House District 51. That district includes Bristol, Damariscotta, Edgecomb, Newcastle, South Bristol and Monhegan Plantation.
Jon’s constituents know that he is an outstanding public servant who stands up for them on environmental issues, taxation and fiscal discipline. His acclaimed “Fleecing of Maine” series of newspaper articles, which he co-authored with David Trahan, exposed waste and abuse throughout state government.
During Jon’s two terms in the Maine Legislature, he has built a reputation as a thoughtful and dedicated legislator. As a member of the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, he has worked diligently to solve our crisis in health insurance affordability. He understands that our dysfunctional insurance system is a major drag on economic growth and job creation.
Jon has been named a Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business. He voted 100 percent to support those Maine employers and entrepreneurs who create the vast majority of our jobs. He also received a very high score of 86.5 from the Maine Economic Research Institute, based on his votes for bills that strengthen our economy.
Against fierce opposition from the majority party, he also voted to require that Maine driver’s licenses be issued only to Maine residents who are in our country legally. Previously, Maine issued this critical credential to illegal aliens and other people who don’t even live in the state.
Rep. Jon McKane deserves another term in the Legislature to continue as a voice of reason for all Mainers who value efficiency and financial responsibility in state government.
