To the Editor:
Memorial Day – beautiful morning – good crowd – nice parade. Over the years I’ve gotten used to spectators, old and young alike, not removing their hats or even standing up when the American flag goes by.
What I am not used to and do not understand is the disrespect shown by some to the invocation, the speakers and our national anthem. This was exemplified by one family who talked through the whole program. Afterwards, I approached the father and asked him why he and his family had come today. He had trouble formulating an answer; so I said, “Because you were talking the entire time.” He waved me aside with a contemptible look on his face and walked away.
I would further ask this father what it is that he is teaching his kids? Disrespect for those who have given them their way of life in America? Discourtesy for those who do wish to honor past and present servicemen? Regrettably, I think so.
