To the Editor:
In response to Paul’s [Marseglia of Dresden] letter last week about gas and cigarette taxes. I know what you’re saying Paul, but what’s the alternative?
I hear a lot of complaints about taxes but seldom do folks offer solutions. We have to raise money somewhere to keep roads, state parks, schools, etc. operating.
What does that money come from? Privatization? That doesn’t work. Look at how much running a privatized war has cost.
Ask Chicago how they like their privatized parking system that has more than quadrupled the fees in less than a year. Look at our privatized healthcare system that has us paying more for healthcare than anyone else.
What good is quality healthcare if you can’t afford it?
The U.S. pays some of the lowest taxes in the industrialized world. Look up “Tax rates around the world” online.
I don’t like paying taxes anymore than anyone else, but I don’t have the answers and in my opinion if you can’t offer a solution, you forfeit your complaining rights.
