To the Editor:
Legislation was passed earlier this year to end Election Day voter registration and require that new voters register no later than two business days prior to an election.
It seems to be reasonable thing to do considering how many errors get made on Election Day voter registrations. Our Secretary of State looked at less than 500 and found 84 percent had errors on them. Thousands of active registrants have been found to have birth dates going back prior to 1900.
Apparently, Maine does not have an accurate Central Voter Registry, or a consistent way to verify a voter’s eligibility to vote here. Given these facts I believe securing the ballot box to be a greater priority than convenient access to it and will be voting “No” on 1.
