To the editor:
I was so impressed by the quality of the articles recently published in the paper by students in Kelly Girard’s eighth-grade language arts class at Great Salt Bay. As a writer and place-based educator, it moves me whenever I read about a teacher bringing community engagement to her curriculum. I found the writing to be engaging and informative.
My husband and I are fairly new to the area (celebrating four years in Bristol) and we both learned new things about downtown Damariscotta, the stories behind some of the local businesses we frequent, and some new places we will now make a point to visit because of the featured spotlights.
I’d like to send a hearty round of applause to the students and the adults who supported their foray into local journalism, and I hope to see much more student work in the future.
