To the Editor:
Why are we making such an ado about a work of art? It seems to me that, for the duration, the proper place for Judy Taylor’s mural about Maine’s labor history is the Frances Perkins Center in Newcastle. In a kindlier time, it could be returned to the Dept. of Labor.
When are we going to stop throwing whoopie pies in everyone’s face and get down to the brass tacks of governing? It is time to set aside childish things and focus on adult concerns such as the provision of meaningful work for Mainers, services to assist Mainers when they are in need, infrastructure to let Mainers get from place to place, education, to move Maine’s current crop of young people into a world of open opportunities, not one of blind alleys. That might rid us of the plague of drug addiction and the anxieties that drive our frequently violent, frightened behavior.
The Governor wants the Labor Department’s conference rooms to be labeled with neutral names, Maine’s mountains or its other scenic wonders. I suggest, since apparently there are four such rooms to be re-named, that they be called Cadillac I, Cadillac II, Cadillac III and Cadillac IV.
For several years I lived in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. During World War I, all the city’s street names honoring its German heritage were changed to non-committal bland neutral names. I was not aware that the Maine Statehouse had the power to declare war on its own citizens, but apparently, it has succumbed to fearing fear itself.
