To the Editor:
This summer the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb has been blessed by a wonderful group of volunteers that helped us with the cleaning, walking of dogs, working with the cats and fundraising.
The shelter has had an unusual amount of animals turned in to us partly due to the economy and various other situations. At times we have had 36 dogs and 170 cats. We had several cats that gave birth at the shelter making the nursery a very populated location.
With the overwhelming kindness of several students and visitors we were able to keep our shelter in spotless condition as we always do. We would like to say a special thank you to Mackensie and her brothers Sam and Gabe who came every day.
They were summering in Maine and are from Massachusetts. Brittney Colby from Wiscasset came to help us this summer and found that the animals touched her in a very special way. Three sisters from Waldoboro came at least three days a week and left no rock unturned in their cleaning efforts.
During the summer many children find various things to do during their vacations but the following children decided to give back: Allie Withee age 12, Leah McAskill (6), Laura Hunt-Age (12), Emma McAskill-(12) Jane McAskill- (10) Cate Withee- (9) and Caroline Hunt-(12) held a Dog Show on July 19 in Southport to benefit the shelter.
They earned $440 and donated the money to go towards the purchase of eight new dog beds. The dog show is an annual event and is now known as “The Pine Cliff Dog Show Fundraiser.”
Ben Sargent, age 6, and Bailey Sargent, age 10, decided to paint wood and rocks to sell and donated their earnings of $40 to the Shelter
Noah Billings of Wiscasset sent out birthday invitations to his friends and asked them to bring dog and cat toys or dog/cat food for the Shelter in lieu of gifts for himself.
We think it is important to share some heart-felt appreciation to all the wonderful children and adults that have contributed so much to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
