To the Editor:
Members of the medical staff of Miles Memorial Hospital support the continued fluoridation of the community water supply. While we are always willing to consider new evidence, a review of the literature including a National Academy of Sciences report reinforces our position.
Dr. Li’s excellent summation in a previous edition makes the scientific case clear. (“Some insight into the fluoridation,” LCN, 10/6/11, Page 11B)
In summation, we quote the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics on this issue. “Water fluoridation is a cost-effective means of preventing dental caries, with the lifetime cost per person equaling less than the cost of 1 dental restoration.
In short, fluoridated water is the cheapest and most effective way to deliver anticaries benefits to communities.”
