Who doesn’t like breasts?
Seriously? Do you know anybody who has ever said anything like “I do not like looking, seeing, or thinking about breasts.”
Chances are you haven’t. Like good food and cold beer, breasts are among the few things people of all persuasions can agree on. People who have them, want them. People who don’t have them, by which we mean men, are compulsively fascinated by them.
The worst you’re going to get from your anti-breast lobby is grudging indifference.
So with that, it is no surprise that breast cancer seems to be the cause celebre in the cancer fundraising world. For the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the nation drapes itself in pink. Even the über-manly men of the NFL drape themselves in the color to show support.
However, broadly speaking, breast cancer is only one category of cancer. Cancer comes in almost as many varieties as people do. It can be deadly and does not discriminate.
Because of their drawing power, it is easy to focus on breast cancer. Its easy to chip in a few dollars here and there for a pink garment or to sponsor someone in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, which steps off in Damariscotta Sun., Oct. 14 at 2 p.m., but let’s not forget for a moment, that the battle does not end there, nor does it go away until next October.
