To the Editor:
Our taxes are paid according to a mil rate determined by the cost of maintaining our town. The mil rate is multiplied by the assessment of your property value. Simply stated mil rate x assessment of your property = taxes. For instance if you own a property valued at $100,000 and you take last year’s mil rate in Damariscotta which was .0158, multiply them and you get $1,580, the amount of taxes to be paid on that property.
Those taxes help pay for the services you receive like schools, fire and police protection, emergency services, county services, solid waste management, town services such as the ability to register your vehicles, clear roads, etc. Look at the annual report to get the names and cost of the services to which you are contributing.
At the annual meeting voters use a hand held clicker to vote yes or no on the articles
Attend the Damariscotta annual town meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Theater on Wednesday, June 10 to vote and be informed.
