To the Editor:
I had to laugh when I read Peter Drum’s column in which he says he is going to reduce taxes. If so, he might be the first Democrat in Maine to do so! But will he really do this? His plan is to reduce taxes – by raising them!
Had he been in office, Peter Drum would have voted for LD 1925, the “Tax Reform Proposal” that would have created dozens of new taxes. Thankfully, our Representative, Jonathan McKane, voted against this misleading and gimmick-filled legislation.
Had Peter Drum been in office we may now be paying new taxes on personal services, home services, entertainment, transportation services, along with dozens of others in exchange for a small drop in income taxes. We would also have increased meals and lodging taxes.
We don’t need tax reform. We need tax relief.
I wonder how new taxes on the ski industry and increased meals and lodging taxes would affect Maine’s struggling economy.
Mr. Drum is also in favor of the new Dirigo tax on beer, wine, soda and health care claims. As Mainers have demonstrated, now is not the time to be raising any taxes in Maine.
We need a representative that understands the tax burden that the average person in Maine is under. Jonathan McKane recognizes this, and we need him to continue to represent us in Augusta. He has my vote.
