To the Editor:
On June 13, I was visiting Damariscotta, on a very rainy day, to celebrate my sister’s birthday. It was one of those days where everything was going wrong: I spilled coffee on my shirt, my toddler was sick and cranky and it was plain awful outside.
We just left the local bookstore and while I was trying to load my 2 year old into my car and carry far too many objects at the same time, I dropped my keys into the drainage grate near my vehicle. I had no idea what to do. I tried contacting my husband in Portland to see if he could drive up with the spare keys, but no answer.
With the help of the bookstore, we contacted the town office who directed us to the Damariscotta Police Department. Within minutes someone was at my car to rescue me. The police officer crafted a magnetic tool and fished my keys out of the drain and even offered advice on how to dry out the water trapped in my key.
What had seemed to be a dreadful rainy day that was against me, turned out to be such a wonderful experience. It is not very often that you come across people who genuinely like helping people and don’t let things like whose job it is get in the way of action.
The officer really made my day and changed what could have been a really bad impression of the town into a great experience.
Thank goodness for the helpful, creative and friendly police force of Damariscotta.
