To the Editor:
We would like to thank the community for their splendid help in making the Hearts for Haiti dinner on Feb. 12 a huge success.
For that purpose, St. Patrick’s parish hall was transformed into a charming Haitian venue with bright colors, Haitian masks, iron sculpture and paintings, and a table full of home-cooked Haitian foods. All of this was brought about by hardworking volunteers from seven churches, as well as from Lincoln Academy.
We are so grateful for their inspired work as well as to the 176 people who attended. Thanks to the generosity of all those contributing, over $8000 was raised. This money will go to Gros Morne, a poor town in northwest Haiti, to care for the 20,000 refugees who fled there from Port-au-Prince after the earthquake.
The Hearts for Haiti dinner shows the power of communities coming together to assist people in need. We hope it will also serve as a foundation to build on in the future as Haiti struggles to recover from a truly devastating disaster.
