To the Editor:
As a member of the Wells-Hussey American Legion Post 42 who has spearheaded the project to place flags in Newcastle and Damariscotta, I would like to report that enough money has been collected to not only purchase and place the flags, but also enough to pay for the required liability insurance for this year for the towns receiving the flags.
It takes many people to get a project of this magnitude to be a success. I was able to get enough donations in three weeks to accomplish this. It all came about from the generous donations of many of the areas’ businesses, private citizens, and out of state contributors. I wish to thank them for all their generosity.
The flags will be put up on the utility poles on Main Street from the corner of Academy Hill in Newcastle to the American Legion in Damariscotta on the morning of May 18.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the foot of the Newcastle/Damariscotta bridge in front of Howard & Bowie at noon with light refreshments at Post 42 afterward. The flags will be on display until Veterans’ Day.
It will be a great tribute to our country and honor our veterans past and present.
This will be an ongoing project to maintain the flags and the insurance for the towns hosting them. Any donations will be gratefully accepted. Checks can be given to the American Legion; please designate “Flags” on the bottom of your check.
