To the Editor:
My mother taught me to write thank you letters, usually for a gift received. This is also a thank you letter for a gift received from my community.
Thank you to the person who held the outer and inner Damariscotta Post Office doors as I hobbled along, trying to negotiate the slippery sidewalk with my crutches and cast. I have learned managing doors when using crutches is a real challenge, often beyond my skill level.
Thank you to all of you who stopped your cars as I slowly made my way across the street. I know I took a long time and once got so off balance I’m sure you all held your breath wondering if I would make it.
Thank you to the Salt Bay Café staff for holding doors and supplying an extra chair for my leg to rest on. It is appreciated. Thank you to the theater for a seat in the lobby while my husband purchased tickets. Finally, a big thank you to the bookstore for having strategically placed chairs for a needed rest.
My eyes have been opened to the difficulties of managing streets, curbs, doors, and steps when you are using crutches. I thank you all for your unsolicited and kindly offered help.
The crutches are gone now and I have graduated to a walking boot, which is great. I plan to offer a helping hand to the next person I see who needs it. A big thank you to all that helped me over the last eight weeks. It is greatly appreciated.
