Is it just us or does it seems like these weeks are rushing by with a dizzying speed?
It seems like the Presidential election was just yesterday. This year, falling as late as it did, it kind of overshadowed Veterans’ Day. Now, we can already feel the rush to Christmas as retailers, eager for some good news, start beating the holiday shopping drum.
That’s a shame because this is the week of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holiday that, for the most part, has avoided the commercialization that increasingly obscures the meaning of Christmas. This is truly a time to slow down, as they say, and smell the turkey.
There is an old saying that goes something like, ‘I once felt bad because I had no shoes, but then I met a man who had no feet.’ This is what this holiday is about.
This is the time to celebrate what we have and be thankful for having it. Some of us have more than others. Some of us will be spending the holiday in houses crammed with families and food and football, others will turn out to one of the many public dinners, and still others will forgo all that and celebrate, if at all, alone.
In whatever fashion, this is the time to be thankful for the pleasures and people in our lives.
Rich or poor, we still live in the greatest country on earth where we still enjoy more freedoms and more opportunities than literally billions of our fellow men.
We just had a national election where the citizens decided the balance of power in this country peacefully, at the ballot box. That is always worth celebrating.
We encourage everyone to take time this holiday in their own fashion, and give thanks for that.
While we are at it, we give thanks for our troops, our service men and women whose efforts support the freedoms and the lives we enjoy.
