To the Editor:
Craig Eliot does a great job exposing the loss of local control in his letter, but the fault in setting up the Two Bridges Regional Jail lays a lot nearer home than Augusta. (“Independent Mainers and local control no longer exist,” LCN, Page 4, 1/27/11)
Several concerned citizens sat in the Bristol Town Office and were dazzled by charts in a presentation that culminated in a guarantee of positive income within a few years. Negative voices were shushed.
Later we voted, and, as usual where someone else’s money is concerned, the bulk of voters were in favor. I suspect that none of them had been at the meeting or had any idea of the program details.
Ironically as the process developed, the Thomaston Penitentiary was being torn down at a cost to taxpayers of $3,000,000.
Whether by accident or design they lied to us then and they will continue to do so. That is the natural condition of bureaucracy.
