To the Editor:
As summer approaches, Lincoln County is entering the high-risk drinking season. In addition to graduation parties and holidays like July 4, we will be inundated with summer tourists.
At barbeques and social gatherings, copious amounts of alcohol will be served. For responsible adults, this is a welcome change of pace. However, for our youth, these events provide ample opportunity to drink and indulge.
Sadly, many of these youth will be drinking and then driving. Alcohol, back roads, and inexperienced drivers are a disastrous combination. However, let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that only young people drink and drive. Every day, inebriated adult drivers get behind the wheel and endanger the rest of us.
As much as we may want to wish the problem away, it’s going to take a determined and concerted effort. If you’re going to drink beyond your limit, either get a designated driver or make alternate arrangements. The life you save may just very well be your own.
Drive Safe.
