To the Editor:
The question of whether the Pemaquid Watershed Association should merge with four other conservation organizations is the most important decision the PWA membership has ever had to make.
I have been involved in PWA since the 1980s and have served on the board of directors and as president and I am now on the land stewardship committee. Talk of merger with various groups has come up many times over the years. This present proposal is by far the most ambitious and studied proposal ever.
I am not going to advocate for one side or the other. There are benefits and pitfalls to either course. To merge is to take a chance on an irreversible route to a much larger, more professional organization, while remaining independent under our present structure can continue our recent success, but may not be sustainable in the future. It is a tough call.
The key to success of either path is for a majority of the PWA membership to speak out. Learn the consequences of the two options. Go to pemaquidwatershed.org to see an excellent presentation on the options.
Read the list of pros and cons and check out the Frequently Asked Questions section. Read the latest PWA newsletter. Talk to your friends and neighbors to hear other perspectives.
Attend the informational meeting at Lakehurst on Egypt Road at 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 and then attend the member meeting on Aug. 31 to cast your vote. This meeting will also be at Lakehurst at 6 p.m.
This is a big deal and we need the benefit of everyone’s intelligence and perspectives. PWA members- please get involved and informed then vote.
