To the Editor:
As I drive around Lincoln County every day. I can’t help but notice the amount of political signage that litters formerly green spaces along the roads. As a former advertising researcher, I realize that the candidates for various offices are hoping to achieve name recognition when voters go to their polling places to cast their ballots.
From my perspective seeing a name on a sign does not persuade me to cast my vote for anyone running for a given office. In fact, some of the signs I see actually serve to remind me of how little some elected officials have actually done for me and my community.
I would like to see candidates interviewed by LCN reporters in order to be able to read a synopsis of their time in office, not just their views and intentions to vote on issues affecting me and their constituents.
I have to admit, looking back over time, I have reached the conclusion that some of our elected officials really have been useless in terms of their actions on our behalf. In some cases, maybe we would benefit from having new faces elected to offices held by incumbents, especially at the national level. I also think it is time for people to stop voting strictly by party.
In some cases that is a wasted vote as some candidates run as a member of their political party hoping to attract the votes of people affiliated with one party or the other.
We all live in a changing world unlike anything we experienced I the past.
We need representatives who understand the impact of changing times on their constituents and vote accordingly in Washington and are willing to report back to their constituents regularly and not just during the election season.
In conclusion, we owe it to ourselves to cast our votes after carefully considering what a candidate has done since the last election, or how we might benefit from the views of people running for an office currently held by an incumbent who may have not served our best interests.
This is a right we Americans enjoy and are envied for by people around the world. Please don’t waste your votes on individuals who have not served our interests since they were elected to an office. Don’t be swayed by the signage littering the roadside.
