We can’t imagine there is a person alive today who hasn’t been touched by cancer in some form, shape, or fashion.
As far as diseases go, cancer is the great equalizer. It is no longer the deadly scourge it used to be, but it still makes victims of us all.
On the brighter side, sometimes it gives heroes the platform they need to shine. Those are the people whose fight against the disease inspires us by their example.
Almost every week someone in our community is diagnosed with cancer. The most recent high-profile patient is Medomak Valley High School Principal Harold Wilson, who was diagnosed in February.
To his constituents, Wilson is known as the steady hand at the tiller of RSU 40’s primary high school. He is a described as a man who can come out of the toughest meeting with a smile on his face.
He started at MVHS as a chemistry teacher in 1990, and then became an assistant principal and then principal in 2007. Suffice it to say that for the majority of long-term MVHS staff members, Harold Wilson literally is part of their family.
While we are saddened to hear of Wilson’s diagnosis, we are cheered by the response from his school community. Benefit suppers and mass head-shavings can only do so much, but the feelings behind such acts can do wonders.
