To the Editor:
Can we afford to pay the state of Maine the new tax on auto repair labor? That could happen, along with 100 other petty things, like even a clown for the kids party. With mechanic labor rate at $70 to $95 and auto body and paint at $44 for each hour, that’s quite a chunk of change you will be paying the state.
I work in the auto field, and for most people a car is a necessity. I see a lot of families now, more than ever, that are trying to keep their car limping along. This will be a hardship on a lot of people.
I also deal with a lot of insurance claims on crashed cars and this also will add to the bottom line; more cars will be a total loss and our auto insurance rates will more than likely increase to compensate. I don’t see the insurance companies absorbing the extra pay out.
Regarding car insurance, as you know, it does not cover mechanical service or rust so you will pay more out of your own pocket for a necessity.
We can ax the five percent tax on services and labor but only if you go out and vote June 8. Vote “Yes” on 1. Yes throw this tax out. Your vote will count.
