As of this writing, it has been exactly 252 days since Steven Kaler’s truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Jeep operated by Harold Benner on Union Road (Rt. 235) in Waldoboro, killing the 63-year-old grandfather instantly.
The crash permanently disfigured the two survivors, Kaler and his passenger Robert Colpritt, and left an indelible memory on those who responded to the scene.
We respect Steven Kaler’s rights to protect himself and we expect him to take whatever legal action necessary to that end. We respect the right of any American to take such action.
However, the fact is that an innocent man died minding his own business and in the 252 days since, there has been no word from the state on plans to take legal action against Kaler, if any.
We understand the concept of waiting to see if Kaler was going to survive his injuries, but it seems if charges are appropriate, then they should have been leveled by now.
We respect our District Attorney Geoff Rushlau a great deal, but we are sure he knows whether or not he has a case to present to a grand jury and we are not sure why he can’t or won’t say so.
If there is no case to present, which might in fact be true, then we are not sure why he can’t say that, either. While we are merely interested spectators, it is not right or fair to leave the Kaler and Benner families in suspense.
