To the Editor:
Thank you to all involved in the recent repairs and restorations to the Walpole, Huston, Woodward Cemetery on Bristol Road, Damariscotta. It was a job well done by our Cemetery Board and, most recently, by residents of Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
It is only fitting that these graves be maintained and hallowed because those who lie within are responsible for the rich history of our area.
We have a vested interest in this history. Our home was built for Benjamin Day in 1754. The fifth owner was Samuel Woodward who transferred ownership of his pasture to the Walpole Meeting House for use as a cemetery. (Damariscotta was then part of the Walpole Township in Bristol.) Both he and Benjamin Day were Revolutionary War veterans and lie within our local cemeteries.
To these first veterans of the colonies, and to all the pioneers of the Pemaquid Peninsula, thank you. Rest in peace.
