To the Editor:
How sad to see a circa 1800 homestead on U.S. Rt. 1 in Wiscasset demolished to make way for a McDonald’s fast-junk-food restaurant. I checked out the old house awhile back and it had original nine-over-six windows, wide-board wainscoting and other details. It could easily have been saved.
Of greater concern is the wasteland Wiscasset is allowing along Rt. 1, in my memory a pretty drive through evergreen woods, farms and fields. This kind of development is not inevitable. There are communities that have rallied to protect their character, their local economy, their downtown.
It’s a shame that this “prettiest village” with so much proud history is trashing it’s outskirts with generic strip development, both ugly and unhealthy.
Wake up, Wiscasset.
