To the Editor:
As a child I was taught early on what being part of a community was all about. Going to the CLC Rec was part of our everyday life. Whether it was being summoned by my Uncle Neil to help build the new playground, roller skating on Friday nights or going to senior group with my grandmother.
As a single parent of two very active boys, the YMCA was a savior for me. It was a safe place for them to go after school and weekends, and then on to summer camp. It taught them how be a part of a community and respect others.
My son Jesse was asked to be a junior member of the YMCA in Boothbay as part of a program through his high school. He now coaches a pee wee basketball team and referees at the YMCA as part of giving back to his community.
I think my uncle Neil would be very proud of the many ways the Y has helped so many in his community and that his dream lives on to continue helping others no matter what town you live in. I hope for many years to come people can continue to benefit from the many programs the YMCA offers, no matter what your income or circumstances.
