To the Editor:
After attending another meeting by the Newcastle Land Use Ordinance Committee, to see the proposed changes to the ordinance it is obvious that the townspeople and landowners do not want this, as written. However, I feel our voice is falling on deaf ears.
Too much of what was being debated was simply one person imposing his or her values and interests over someone else’s values and interests.
Protect the resources, sure, but don’t tell us how and where we can use them and please, make sure those who own land are able to achieve their goals for land they own.
The Draft Plan should be soundly rejected and the principle reason for that is the plan’s failure to serve the landowner.
We need to create a new Comprehensive Plan, or at least have a new set of eyes look at it so landowners can make sure our new plan acknowledges and makes possible to achieve the hopes and dreams for the land we own.
I realize this is a tough task but a necessary one. I am also quite sure that if another committee were appointed, it would consist of a much broader range of people.
Volunteers are tough to come by, we all get caught up in our own lives and hope that someone else will look out for our best interest. Well that doesn’t happen and for that we are now in this mess.
This cannot be done over night and should not be forced down our throats so let’s stop, regroup and try this again.
Volunteers anyone?
