To the Editor:
At the heart of every YMCA are the staff members and volunteers who make a difference, who exemplify the Y’s core values, caring, respect, responsibility and honesty. The CLC YMCA has volunteers in its walls every day making a difference. I would like to recognize some of those volunteers.
Our YMCA would not be as successful as it is without our volunteers; it’s their time and talent that support the Y staff and together we achieve the success our Y, our community and members strive for.
The Y held two youth basketball tournaments in February and many home games against local teams. The tournaments’ success was not only measured by winning games but the man hours put into the tournaments, the volunteers that show up ready to work and smiles on the faces of everyone enjoying the event and success of their children.
The 3rd and 4th grade tournament was great basketball and a huge amount of volunteer time. The YMCA had volunteer coaches hard at work, Referees controlling the games, scorekeepers, timers, and volunteers working the concessions stand. The Y had over 30 volunteer hours just on Friday of the tournament and over 50 volunteer hours on Saturday.
The 5th and 6th grade tournament was even more successful! They had two days of concessions and five more games. At the 5th and 6th grade level the YMCA had paid referees but all the other time consuming and difficult work was done by volunteers. The concession stand alone was over 75 volunteer hours. That hurdle was taken on by the 5th and 6th grade girls team and their families. They did a great job selling everything from cookies to waffles.
The YMCA does a great job with their programs but the volunteers and athletes make the program a great success and this success keeps participants and spectators coming back every year. Thank you to all the volunteers at the CLC YMCA for your time and effort.
