To the editor:
May I be allowed to voice my appreciation to all our unsung heroes, both men and women, who protect our homes from fire and sometimes medical emergencies? Not the civil service, paid firefighters, but all those men and women who volunteer to man our fire stations throughout this wonderful state.
Right now there is a shortage of volunteers and if anyone wonders why, just look at the facts.
They are asleep in their own beds and then get a call anytime and jump up, dress, and rush to their station, where they have to don their gear and, in some cases, pray that old fire truck will do its duty and get them to the blaze. Yes, these volunteers are hurting for funds to sustain them. It is very sad when they have to hold sales and dinners just to help them keep things going and buy equipment, etc.
Remember, these are mostly small towns with no fire hydrants, and just to get some water is a chore in itself, so please honor our volunteers. In my opinion, we should all pitch in however we can, whether with donations, or for the young and strong, by visiting the stations and seeing if they could use a helping hand. Remember, these firefighters sacrifice not only their lives, but family time, etc.
