To the Editor:
I believe that Governor LePage is right and the welfare recipients should be drug tested. I think it is an insult to the hard working Mainers who pay State taxes that help support the welfare recipient. Why should our tax dollars support a drug addiction?
I also believe that if the recipient is single and has a live in partner, his or her income should be considered when applying for welfare.
Also, the recipient should be encouraged to further their education. Many community colleges have great two-year programs, offer financial aid, daycare (which I believe is free if you are a student) and offer assistance in obtaining employment after graduation. Many of the Universities in the State also have great two-year programs as well.
I believe the welfare system was set up to assist people during a difficult time, not to be a life-long means of income.
