It’s hard to look at Damariscotta’s Main Street this week and not think of the crowds that packed this tiny downtown this past weekend.
Not too long ago you could almost hear the latch on the state’s front door close once Labor Day rolled around. More and more in recent years, leaf peeping has become a thing, of course, but this week the quiet following the dull roar of the Pumpkinfest very much feels like a bow on this tourist season.
Before we brace ourselves for the holidays, let’s tip our caps to the Pumpkinfest organizers.
Particularly impressive this year, the artists who turned these massive gourds into public works of art have collectively outdone themselves. Each fall we look forward to seeing what our local all-stars are going to come up with and they never disappoint.
This year’s exhibition seems particularly inspired.
Finally, it is worth remembering every time one of these community events comes together, things like this do not organize themselves.
It would be nice if they did because it would spare everyone behind the scenes a massive amount of work. Community events big and small come together because somebody got the ball rolling and people invested in their community supported the cause.
People left Lincoln County this week, taking with them memories that can last for a lifetime. Those memories were made because a lot of people, in the case of the Pumpkinfest, devoted hours and hours of effort into making them possible.
Well done. We can’t wait until next year.
