To the Editor:
As a long time supporter of Skidompha, I was surprised and disappointed to learn of the Azula Jewelry Sale, supposedly to benefit our library. When I recall all the many interesting and remunerative events sponsored by our own local “Stars” for the library, I am annoyed that none of our Damariscotta jewelers were considered or at least invited to participate.
Was someone asleep in the stacks when this decision was made? Where was our vaunted local community spirit? To be sure, out of area business could be made welcome, but not to be the exclusion of our own local business and supporters.
After all, July is prime shopping time with all the visitors here, and an outfit with no local connection, pays no local taxes and has the benefit of using the library as a sales place, can come in and scoop up a real bonanza. Sounds like a good deal for Azula, but why cut out our local supporters? Would be interesting to know what percentage of sales goes to Skidompha.
No being privy to the circumstances, perhaps I misjudge the case, but I think the Library board has made a mistake. As this is billed as a “First Annual Sale,” I hope they will review this whole matter.
