To the Editor:
Women and guns go together in Maine for good reasons. It’s a love affair that has lasted for generations of Maine women. Smart ladies are reliable and necessary around the home. We help keep things safe and orderly in times of trouble. Come on, is a home really a home without a good woman and at least one trusty gun? I think not.
Please don’t mistake my feminine frankness for being sexist or overly blunt. If someone perceives this as sexist, then they probably aren’t local or weren’t raised in this amazing state. Many native Maine women grew up with guns and value how important they are in rural communities. Guns are simply part of life here.
In many healthy marriages true love and a good gun go together, well at least in Maine they do. Just take a drive to Hussey’s Store in Windsor and take a look at their iconic sign “guns, wedding gowns and cold beer.” That sums it up rather nicely.
Although many Maine men have learned to respect a woman wielding a cast iron frying pan or a rolling pin in the kitchen, there is something to be said for a woman who can out shoot her husband at the range. In fact there are plenty of good men in this state who think strong responsible women who can shoot well are downright sexy.
Honestly ladies, do you really want an anti-gun girlie man in your life? Do you really want a relatively useless one who doesn’t believe in a woman’s right to bear arms? Me neither.
I wonder how an anti-gun man could have survived in rural Maine in the old days. Granted today he might have a Prius and plenty of hair gel, but what would he really do if someone broke into the house? Would he grab a whistle and hide under the bed hoping the bad guy would leave?
(Ladies, if an intruder ever broke into your home you would be grateful for your gun and solid knowledge of how to use it safely.)
Granted we are blessed to have great local police, yet how long would it take them to reach your rural location in an emergency?
In case there are folks from away reading this, most Maine women are prepared for emergencies. Fortunately, there many women own guns. They love their guns and use them responsibly. Most Maine women are smart, caring, and resilient so they take their gun ownership seriously. Grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters own and use guns. That’s the way it should be.
So to all you anti-gun folks from away: Hi, you are in a peace loving and gun owning state. Please respect our local culture and respect Maine women. Please respect our guns, and our lawful right to use them responsibly, and we will get along just fine.
