At least once a year, we use this space to implore our readers to shop local. But we often fail to mention that “shop local” goes beyond choosing Sherman’s over Amazon or Renys over Wal-Mart. We have local options for almost any expense in our lives – a car, a contractor, even utility bills.
Here at The Lincoln County News, we practice what we preach. We heat and cool the building with a geothermal system from Mid-Coast Energy Systems, of Damariscotta. We power the building with solar panels from Newcastle resident Richard Simon’s Maine Energy Performance Solutions. Tidewater Telecom, of Nobleboro, provides our ultra-fast fiber-optic internet connection, as well as our phone service. We purchase every vehicle in our fleet from local dealerships and take our vehicles to local garages for maintenance and repairs.
We support local businesses because we are a local business and rely on other local businesses to support us.
Every business and individual in Lincoln County has the same choice to make. When we shop local, we help the local economy thrive and we support our family, friends, neighbors, and ourselves. When we don’t, our dollars permanently leave the local economy.
So shop local this holiday season, and not just for gifts. Consider all the expenses in your household budget – groceries, insurance, even entertainment. On our own behalf and the behalf of all local businesses, we thank you in advance.
