If you drive by N.C. Hunt on Route 215 in Jefferson, you will see the message “united we stand, together we rebuild” on one side of the marquee and “thank you firefighters, open for business” on the other.
Dozens of firefighters from 13 towns, as well as others who belong to the county firefighter strike team and hazmat decon strike team, contributed to a marathon effort to control and extinguish a large fire at the business’s sawmill late Friday and early Saturday.
While the rest of us were sleeping, enjoying a leisurely breakfast, doing household chores, or otherwise going about our normal Saturday routines, these volunteers were attempting to control a raging fire with plenty of fuel, doing hot, dirty, dangerous work for little to no pay.
N.C. Hunt is grateful to these firefighters for their work to save its store, kiln, and the rest of its Jefferson property.
The rest of us should be grateful because they stand by to do the same for us and our families and businesses at any time of day or night.
