A report of an armed robbery and attempted kidnapping in Waldoboro on Friday, Sept. 1 was unfounded, according to a press release from the Waldoboro Police Department. The department is treating the report as a “possible drug-related incident.”
The Waldoboro Police Department, along with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and an agent with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, received the report and responded to the area of Route 1, Route 235, and Lady Slipper Lane in Waldoboro at about 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Upon arrival, Waldoboro Officer Larry Hesseltine spoke to Nahshon McKinney, 22, of Rochester, N.Y., and Rashad McKinney, 25, of Augusta.
The McKinneys told police they were walking along Route 1 when a black station wagon pulled alongside them, pointed an assault rifle at them, and robbed them of about $500.
“As a result of our initial investigation, it has been determined that this was not an armed robbery or attempted kidnapping … it was confirmed that there was no black station wagon with armed assailant(s) bearing AR assault rifle(s),” Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde said in the press release.
Rashad McKinney was arrested on a bail violation and taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, according to the press release, which did not specify the violation. Nahshon McKinney was not charged with a crime.
An investigation is ongoing, but there is no threat to the public, Labombarde said.
