A suspect in a robbery at The Big Apple store on Stone Street in Augusta was arrested in Edgecomb on Wednesday, July 27.
Abraham C. Matt, 30, allegedly robbed the convenience store at about 11:40 p.m., Monday, July 25 to pay a drug debt, according to media reports.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sgt. Jason Pease, Detective Sgt. Ronald Rollins, Detective Scott Hayden, and Detective Jared Mitkus assisted the Augusta Police Department in making the arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to the Kennebec Journal, which cites an affidavit by Augusta Detective Jesse Brann, Matt told police he is a heavy narcotics user and robbed the store to pay a drug debt. He allegedly entered the store, took a Moxie soda from a refrigerator, and demanded that the clerk give him all the cash in the register. He did not display a weapon.
He reportedly left the store on foot with about $90 in cash. Police made the arrest after reviewing surveillance footage.
Matt is reportedly in custody at Kennebec County Jail with bail set at $5,000. He faces a charge of class B robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Matt has prior convictions for burglary and theft in Waldo County, according to the Kennebec Journal. Court documents in the robbery case list him as a transient with recent addresses in Augusta and Whitefield, while a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release refers to him as an Edgecomb resident.
Matt has also been charged in connection with a July 21 robbery of the same convenience store, according to WGME News 13.
Jessica Morang, 37, of Pittston, was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 2, and charged with robbery in connection with the July 21 incident.
Morang allegedly entered the store early July 21, demanded money from the clerk, and left on foot with an undisclosed amount, according to the Kennebec Journal, which cites a statement by Augusta Deputy Police Chief Jared Mills. Matt was reportedly charged with being Morang’s accomplice.
