The Wiscasset Police Department recovered a handgun in a black case from the restroom at the Circle K convenience store on Bath Road (Route 1) in Wiscasset the morning of Sunday, Aug. 21, according to police.
The handgun is being stored at the police department. No one has come forward to claim it, Wiscasset Police Chief Jeffrey Lange said.
There is no civil or criminal penalty for leaving a handgun unattended, “just embarrassment,” Lange said. The handgun is not registered and does not appear to be stolen, he said. Registration is not required for a handgun in Maine, he said.
It is not uncommon for gun owners to forget their firearms in public bathrooms, especially if they are on holsters, which must be removed when using the bathroom, Lange said.
“We’ll hold onto it until someone comes forward and provides proof of ownership,” Lange said.
The black case containing the handgun was reported to the police department at about 8:30 a.m., according to the police report. Wiscasset Reserve Officer Levon Travis was the responding officer.
