A Warren man has received a $3,000 fine and a 14-day license suspension for a civil violation in connection with a fatal crash in 2012.
Johnnie L. James, 23, admitted to a single count of motor-vehicle violation resulting in death on March 14.
James, then 19 and living in Nobleboro, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu north on East Pond Road on Jan. 24, 2012, according to media reports at the time of the crash. Robert P. Lawrence, 72, of Jefferson, was driving a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Route 32.
James did not stop at the stop sign where East Pond Road meets Route 32. The vehicles collided in the intersection, causing Lawrence’s vehicle to leave the road, strike a tree, and flip onto its side before coming to rest.
An ambulance transported Lawrence to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, where he was pronounced dead. James was not injured.
James was summonsed Oct. 6, 2014, more than 2 1/2 years after the crash. He initially received the maximum penalty: a four-year license suspension and $5,000 fine. He was sentenced by default after failing to appear in court.
James’ attorney filed a motion to reopen the case Oct. 20, 2015. The motion was granted Nov. 22, 2015.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Collamore was the investigating officer.
West Rockport attorney Steven C. Peterson represented James.
