The Commissioner recently issued to Maine Oyster, Inc. of Freeport, Maine two 3-year leases, SHE LE3x and SHE LE4x, for bottom culture of American/Eastern oysters. Both leases are located in the upper Sheepscot River, Newcastle, Maine. More specifically, lease SHE LE3x is located southwest of Lehman Island on 3.89 acres; and lease SHE LE4x is located east of Lehman Island on 3.91 acres. The leases must be marked in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard and DMR requirements. Dragging, shellfish harvesting, and disturbance of the bottom are prohibited on the lease sites except by authorization of the leaseholder. Other public uses that are not inconsistent with the purposes of the leases are allowed by the lease statutes, 12 MRS §§ 6072, 6072-A, & 6072-B. FMI: Cindy L.
