On Saturday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. Lincoln Academy, at 81 Academy Hill Road in Newcastle, will hold an official ceremony of installation for new LA Head of School Jeffrey S. Burroughs.
Burroughs has been serving as Lincoln’s head of school since July 1, when he took over the position from Nancy Starmer, who served as interim head of school for the 2018-2019 school year. Burroughs most recently served as the assistant head for curriculum at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Before that, he worked as an engineer at IBM, and served as assistant head of school at Hyde School in Bath, where he also taught math and coached soccer.
Burroughs and his wife, Melissa, live in Borland Hall, the traditional head of school’s residence on the Lincoln Academy campus.
“Both Jeff and the board share a reverence for the history of this institution,” said Judi Hilton, chair of the Lincoln Academy Board of Trustees. “This event gives us the opportunity to honor that more than 200-year history while also starting a new tradition. We want to celebrate the next generation of leadership, and the integration of Jeff’s unique qualities and experiences with our historic institution.”
The installation program will last about an hour and include musical performances by current LA students, and speakers representing students, faculty, alumni, and trustees, as well as people who have mentored Burroughs throughout his career. According to Hilton, “We are honoring both Jeff’s past and our collective future.”
The head of school installation ceremony will take place in the Nelson Bailey Gymnasium and a reception will follow in the LA Dining Commons. The public is invited to attend. Guests are invited to park in the student lot across from the LA gym, with overflow parking at the tennis courts and Applied Technology and Engineering Center.
