The RSU 40 administrative team continues to meet and discuss next year’s budget. Our goal is to develop a budget that meets the needs of students without overburdening taxpayers. Our discussion includes all areas of the budget such as staffing, facilities, maintenance, athletics, technology, transportation, and food service. The superintendent and business manager let us know about areas that are obligations for next year’s budget, like contracted services, Midcoast School of Technology’s proposed budget increase and debt service, salaries and wages, and benefits. We also discussed requests for additions to the budget from administrators to assist in determining priorities.
We know that not all of the requests will be funded. Our district just doesn’t have the money. It’s important, however, for board members and the public to understand what we believe is needed to provide an adequate education for our students.
Administrators have several more meetings before we submit a final proposal to the board. Then the budget committee of the school board will meet to begin reviewing the proposal. The public is invited to these meetings, which will be held on Monday evenings beginning Feb. 26 at Union Elementary School at 6:30 p.m.
Those unable to attend these meetings can contact their town representatives. Contact information can be found at msad40.org/files/12_13_17_board_members_committee_2017_18_1.pdf.
