Abby Farrin, 12, of Jefferson, a player on the Greater Augusta “Capital Mainiac” softball team has just won her third straight state championship. Farrin played for the age 10 & Under level that won the states the past two years.
This spring she moved up to the age 12 & Under (she is league age 11) level to earn her third state championship. She is the lone member of the team from Lincoln County.
The first day of games was played in Augusta on June 20. They easily won the first game 17-3 against the Southern Maine Flame team from South Portland.
Farrin played first base and walked twice and scored a run in the win. The second game was closer as they played the Maine Attraction from the Falmouth area. They had a slim 4-3 lead after six innings when they put it away in the 7th. Abby had a single and scored in the Mainiac’s five run 7th inning for a 9-3 victory.
The third game was a difficult loss to the Messalonskee Team from Waterville 5-3. They all fought a hard game but came up short. This loss put the team into the Loser’s Bracket for Sunday’s competition in Waterville.
Sunday morning’s first game was against the Maine Attraction again. Abby reached on an error in the 1st inning and scored the first run of the game. She also singled later in the game. The Mainiacs got ahead 5-2 after three innings and held on for 5-3 win. This win placed them into the championship game and a rematch with the undefeated Waterville team.
They would have to beat the Waterville team twice for the championship and they did! First game was a great 12-1 win and they took the last game 9-2. Farrin scored in both games and had a double in the clincher.
Abby Farrin is headed for the ASA 12U New England Tournament this weekend, July 10-12, in Keene, N.H. She is the daughter of Wayne and Lynn Farrin, of Jefferson. Her proud grandparents are Paul and Pauline Farrin, of South Bristol and Richard and Jeanne Chadwick, of Nobleboro.
