Five female wrestlers from Lincoln County traveled to Gardiner Area High School Tuesday night to compete in the third annual Maine Girls’ State Wrestling Championships. Medomak Valley junior Cheyenne Augustine placed second in the 120-pound weight division in her third appearance in the State meet. Lincoln Academy wrestler Olivia Genthner placed second in the 155-pound division. Eagle Nikki Leeman placed third at 107, and Harley-Rose Benner (115) and Sarah Alley (128) took fourth.
Augustine pinned Kaila Makepeace of Madison in 3:28 in her first match to advance to the championship round. Augustine met up with Central’s Alex Lodge in the finals and lost by 6-3 decision. Augustine was State girls’ runner up last year, and won a State title in 2008.
Olivia Genthner defeated Kirsten Crosson of Hall-Dale by 4-1 decision in her first match, then advanced to the finals, where she lost to Olivia Labrecque of Oak Hill by pin in 3:31.
Nikki Leeman was pinned by Kayla Vigue of Winslow in 3:59, then beat Taylor Pomerleau of Oak Hill in the consolation finals for third place.
Harley-Rose Benner was pinned by Wells’ Deanna Camache in the second period, and was pinned by Mt.Valley’s Nicole Burgess in the consolation finals for fourth place.
Sarah Alley lost a 9-2 decision to Kim Rogers of Massabesic and lost a 6-2 decision to Tamara Cushman of Monmouth for fourth place.
