Maranacook boys soccer team defeated Wiscasset 6-0 in a West Class C quarterfinal match-up under the lights in Readfield on Oct. 29. The physical and intense game got out of control in the second half when Black Bear Codey Solmitz threw Mason Whitaker to the ground with 14:43 to play and punched him at least twice.
Wolverine teammate Bryson Grover (the smallest man on the field) was infuriated on the dirty play and a scuffle ensued between him and Solmitz.
Grover was knocked to the ground by Solmitz and got up and continued to pursue the Black Bear. Players from both teams stepped in to separate the two. Grover was ejected from the game for his part in the scuffle.
Wiscasset goal keeper Dylan McMahon ran over to aid his teammate and was yellow carded, as was Maranacook’s Solmitz, who started the altercation.
“It was a very intense game. Both teams played hard. That wrestling match was the catalyst,” coach Todd Souza said. “They gave everything they had out there. It was just one of those things that set them off. I’m still trying to figure it all out,” Souza said.
Maranacook held a 22-2 edge in shots, and did not give up a single shot to Wiscasset in the first half. McMahon had 19 saves and Conlon Ranta two for the Wolverines, and Worster had two saves for the Bears.
The Bears scored three goals in each half. Alec Daigle scored three goals, and Nick Lacasse, Zack Godbout and Ryan Ray one each for the Bears. Lacasse, Beckwith and Elwell had an assist each.
“They have had a fantastic season. I am so proud of them. They saw what it takes to get to the next level tonight. For a young team, they did very well,” coach Souza said.
