Boothbay Region boys cross country team ran to a first place finish in the Mt. Valley Conference cross country championships, held at UMA in Augusta Saturday morning. The Seahawks placed five scoring runners in the top 12.
Boothbay was paced by Joey Paolillo, who placed fourth in 18:08. Rounding out the scoring five were 6. Kyle Alamo, 18:39; 7. Kyle Ames, 18:43; 9. Kyler Carty, 18:54, and 12. Trystan Mercier, 19:10. Also running for Boothbay were 13. Matt Burnham, 19:14; and 28. Shane Johnson, 20:29.
Boothbay’s championship was marred by unsportsmanlike conduct from a parent of a Boothbay boy who incorrectly and publicly accused Wiscasset runner Brandon Goud of cheating. Goud, who also plays soccer for the Wolverines, has shown steady improvement since joining the cross country team midway through the season.
Goud ran the race of his career on Saturday to cross the finish line with a top 10 performance in eighth place in a time of 18:46. In the MVC preview meet two weeks ago, Goud finished 12th in 19:17 on the same course. His eighth place finish on Oct. 18 saw a 31 second improvement in time.
Also finishing for Wiscasset were 53. Angus Putnam, 24:06, and 71. Noah Jones, 30:28.
