Boothbay Region High School boys cross country team won the 2013 State Class C cross country championships Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation in Cumberland. The West Class C champion Seahawks edged the East C champions Orono by two points, 68 to 70 in an exciting state championship match-up.
Boothbay placed all five scoring runners in the top 30, including two in the top 10; Benn Scully and Robert Campbell. Scully and Campbell received state medallions. The top five were recognized for finishing in the top 30.
Wet conditions made for slower times than at the West Regionals the week before. Scully placed eighth overall in a time of 18:10; Campbell was a second behind him in ninth place in 18:11. Joey Paolillo just missed medaling, taking 11th in 18:15. Matt Burnham matched his own time from the West C Regionals to place 19th in 18:48, and Jack Hasch placed 29th in 19:24 to complete the Seahawks scoring five. Kyle Alamo placed 37th in 19:29 and Kyler Carty 54th in 20:21 to round out Boothbay’s team.
Wiscasset’s first year runner David Pearson ran to a respectable 31st place finish in state Class C in 19:25.
In Class B boys action, Lincoln Academy finished seventh out of 15 teams with 212 points. Cape Elizabeth scored 49 points to beat out Ellsworth, 61, for the State title.
Two Eagle runners, Nick Smelcer and Avery Genus, were recognized for finishing in the top 30. Smelcer placed 25th in 18:03 and Genus 30th in 18:13. Julian Frink placed 56th in 19:07, Billy Seeman 57th in 19:09 and Nathan Osborne 84th in 19:51 to round out the Eagles’ scoring five. Alex Tomasello placed 91st in 20:11 and Abe Steinberger 102nd in 20:47.
Alexander Casas placed 79th in State Class B for Medomak Valley in a time of 19:34.
Boothbay girls placed fifth in State Class C with 150 points. Orono won with 48 points to beat out Washburn (50).
Lady Seahawk Sophia Thayer medaled in the top 10, placing fourth in 21:03. Thayer cut 13 seconds off her West C time on the same course. Morgan Crocker was 34th in 23:10, followed by 42. Hannah Morley, 23:38; 61. Tori Schmid, 24:52; 65. Shaw Pinkham, 25:07; 73. Brooke Alley, 25:29; and 75. Kate Friant, 25:50.
