Camden Hills rallied for three runs in the top of the extra eighth inning to surge past Medomak Valley 3-0 on Monday, May 20 in Waldoboro. Two of the top pitchers in midcoast high school softball squared off in an epic pitchers’ duel that was tied 0-0 after regulation. The Panthers committed five errors in the game, including three in the final inning that sank their chance to earn the win.
Hits were hard to come by for batters on both squads as each starting pitcher gave up only two hits. Madi Boynton struck out 13 and walked four in 7.2 innings on the mound for the Panthers, and Maya Stone went the distance to earn the win for Camden Hills while striking out eight and walking two.
Camden Hills finally got on the board in the extra eighth inning when Brenna Mackey reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Stone ground ball fielder’s choice. Sierra Laukka hit a single and Adriana Pedro walked to load the bases. Madison Hannan hit a ground ball and the Panthers Sara Nelson fielded it and forced an out at home but the attempted double play throw by Haley Puchalski to first base sailed over Claudia Feeley’s mitt into the outfield allowing two Windjammers to score.
Sidney Nichols replaced Boynton on the mound, and got the final out to end the Windjammers rally. The Panthers were unable to muster a response in the bottom of the eighth inning off Stone and Camden Hills prevailed 3-0.
Peyton Eaton (1SB) and Kendall Simmons had the only hits off Stone for the Panthers. Puchalski walked and stole two bases for the Panthers in the sixth inning to give the Panthers a chance to win in regulation, but Stone tossed a strikeout to end the threat.
Laukka and Natalie Bolduc had the only two hits for Camden Hills, who improved to 9-5 in Class A North. Medomak Valley, competing in Class B South, dropped to 11-2 on the season with the loss.
