Tournament results: The Ladies President’s Cup Championship was decided last week with Evie Graham finishing in first place and Anne Knott taking second.
Linda Cosgrove and Trudi Snediker also competed. The Men’s Senior Club Championship for low handicappers, 55 years of age or older, was also concluded with Wim Hart winning with a score of 75. Stan Wade and Barney Ireland also competed.
The Senior Club Championship for those having a 10 handicap or higher ended in a tie. Jim Spinney and Bucky Kahl were declared the winners as it was decided not to match cards to decide a single winner.
Many believe that matching cards is a poor way to determine a winner. Thanks to Doug Hancock for providing these results.
Men’s Morning League: A couple of years ago my old partner, Marty Olsen, and I set the League record of nine putts for two-man teams. We thought that record might last a long time (maybe not as long as DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak) .
Last week the team of Joe McDermott and Tony Papa had the lowest number of putts with nine and this is the second time this season that the record has been equaled.
Dana Leavitt’s drive was closest to the center line on the seventh hole. The team of Papa and McDermott had the lowest net score for the day with 27.
In second place was the team of Kent Booher and John Ineson, who was filling in for Laird, with 28. Ian Drewette and Doug Halm, and Dana Leavitt and Ken Coombs tied for third with scores of 31.
After four weeks of the second half of the season Booher and Laird are in first place with 13 points. There is a three-way tie for second place with the teams of McDermott/Papa, Piper/Mocarski and Drewette/Halm with 14 points.
All alone in third place is the first half winning team of Spinney/Schleicher with 15 points. There is only one more week in the League’s season so next week is a crucial week for the five teams. The master statistician, Joe McDermott, said that any one of these teams could easily finish in first place next week.
Men’s Club Championship: Last week Bill Dagley defeated Mark Hanley and Kyle Feltis won over R. J. Ochs in close matches. This puts Dagley and Feltis in the final 36-hole match on Sun., Aug. 26.
Neither player has ever won the Club Championship, and only Kyle has been in the finals before. Obviously both are playing excellent golf to have won matches over the very best Wawenock golfers. It should be a great match, so, if you want to see some excellent golf and enjoy the beautiful Wawenock course that is in top shape, come out and take a walk with these two fine golfers. Thanks, Doug Hancock.
Evening Ladies League
On Aug. 13, the ladies league once again invited the men to play a game of alternate shot which is always a favorite and this year was no exception. First place honors went to the team of Traci Beier and Bill Dagley with a net score of 30. Second place went to the team of Michele Christensen and Bucky Kahl; third place to Stephanie Russell and Mike Bishop; fourth place to Jane Dahmen and Tom Grose; fifth place to Patsy Dey and RJ Ochs. Alex Whitney had a chip-in on No. 6. Thanks to Trudi Snediker for her report.
A Little Golf Humor: After all these years, it’s still embarrassing for me to play on the American golf tour. Like the time I asked my caddie for a sand wedge and he came back 10 minutes later with a ham on rye. – Chi Chi Rodriguez
Caddies are so funny. They are a breed of their own. Shoot a good round and your caddie will say, ‘Man, we shot a 66 today!’ Shoot a bad round and your caddie will say, ‘Hell, he shot a lousy 79!’ – Lee Trevino
“I needed them both.” -Bob Lanier, basketball player, on playing in a threesome with a doctor and a priest.
